We have an enormous fig tree in our yard and this recipe gives me a great way to use its fruit and all the frozen bananas we accumulate. So simple and the figs really make the smoothie creamy. My husband even loved it and he's not a fig fan. I'm going to try to freeze some of our figs so we can make this smoothie all year.-26 Jul 2009
Loved this! I had an abundance of figs this summer and froze them in zip lock bags. I was looking for a recipe that would utilize them and this is it! I used frozen figs and a fresh banana and non fat milk. I also made it again and added a serving of fat free greek vanilla yogurt, it was yummy and made it thicker, more like a shake. Thanks, this is a great way to use up my figs a few at a time and help me in my pre-holiday dieting!-16 Nov 2010

Actually I give 3,5 stars. I don`t know maybe it were my figs or orange juice, but this smoothie was very very sweet. This is the reason we didn`t enjoyed it so much. Great idea and figs go great with orange, but the sweeteness really overwhelmed here.-08 Nov 2010

During Fig season, I prefer to use fresh ones in this smoothie. Costco is great for buying large quantities, so that I can use them in smoothies throughout the week. Whenever these aren't available, dried figs work just as well! Just soak them in water beforehand, to make them a bit softer. You can even freeze the figs to make the smoothie colder.
The bananas are key to making this smoothie as smooth and sweet as it is, so make sure they are nice and ripe for the best result. Just like with the figs, a frozen banana will make the smoothie nice and cold!
I've used regular milk in this smoothie, but you can use almond, oat, soy, or any other type of milk you'd like to make this a vegan smoothie.

This coconut fig smoothie was made on a hot summer morning, during my trip to India. These fresh figs were from our farm and so too the tender coconuts.
Coconut has immense health benefits. The young coconut or tender coconut meat is easy to digest and one of the exiciting ways to enjoy this is to make a delicious smoothie, pair it up with mango, banana or figs, all taste equally great.
After slurping off the water from a couple of tender coconuts daily, they were just thrown away as it is hard to break open them. One fine day, kids got my dad to break open them with a cleaver. Since then we got hooked to enjoying the coconut meat.

Fresh Fig and Rose Smoothie Recipe
Although smoothies have been around for decades in North America, only in recent years have they grown popular in Europe, and in France in particular*.
We call them smoothies too, if you want to know, except we don’t pronounce the final “s,” even in the plural, and the “th” sound, ever a challenge for the French tongue to produce, varies in accuracy. Most people opt for a straightforward smoo-zee, unless they go for a smoo-tee or even, more rarely but much more amusingly, a smoo-fee.
(I’ll take this opportunity to note that in France, when an English word is used in a French sentence, even those who normally have fair pronunciation skills will say that word with a French accent — it sounds pompous otherwise.)
In any case, it is now frequent to see smoothies for sale, either bottled or freshly blended, at sandwich-and-salad shops in Paris, and a few have made it their specialty. They’re also available in the supermarket’s juice aisle, and a number of books have been written on the subject — always a good trend-o-meter.
Among these titles is a recipe book issued by Innocent, a British company that produces dairy-free, all-natural, no-sugar-added smoothies, and markets them with a “we’re real people” approach that has served them extremely well so far.
The French rights for this book were recently acquired by my French publisher, and because Matthew Gardan, the half-French, half-Aussie guy who handles the marketing for Innocent France, happens to be a reader of Chocolate & Zucchini, he asked if I’d contribute a recipe to the French edition.
I said I would, and this is the recipe I offered: a simple fig smoothie, thick and velvety, its rich flavors exalted by a splash of rose water.
The book came out last May, and my recipe appears on page 154, among fifty-four other recipes that range from classic (strawberry and banana carrot, apple, and ginger) to unusual (avocado and pear blackcurrant and litchi), illustrated by candid photography on matte paper, and introduced by the friendly banter that has become the signature voice of Innocent.
You’ll find my smoothie recipe below — and of course, if you have a killer combo of your own to share, I’m all ears!
* Lilo tells me she had excellent smoothies in Amsterdam ten years ago, including a memorable one involving raspberries, banana, and passion fruit, so it seems some European countries caught on earlier than others.
Ingredients for Fig Smoothie
I used very basic ingredients which you will have in your pantry to make this smoothie - Fresh Figs, Milk, Dates and Almond Butter.
I used fresh figs as they were easily available where I live in California. If fresh are not available, frozen figs will work well in this recipe too.
You can also use dried figs. If they are too hard, soak them in water for some time before blending.
You can even freeze the fresh figs before using, to get a cooler smoothie!
I used whole milk to make this smoothie. To make this fig smoothie vegan, use almond milk.
How to make fig banana breakfast smoothie?
This fig and banana smoothie has banana, fig, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, honey and milk.
I prefer skimmed milk or cow milk as it is lighter and will be easily digested by babies. Also if you are vegan then replace this with almond milk and remove honey from your list. You will get natural sweetness of figs and banana.
Personally I like this drink without any additional sweetener like sugar or honey. If you are pregnant and to-be-mother, avoid adding sugar much to your food.
Don’t add cashews to the drink as it will increase weight.
Vegan Breakfast Smoothie Option
If you are vegan, you may replace cow milk with non-dairy milk like almond milk and soy milk. Soy milk is the best source of protein amongst all non-dairy milk. However almond milk is also a great option for this smoothie recipe.
Again skip honey totally. You may replace it with maple syrup. But the natural sweetener of fig and banana is enough in fact. You may not need extra sweetener.
Is almond milk safe during breastfeeding?
Yes, almond is safe for breastfeeding mothers. This is healthy and rich in protein and calcium. This also increases creaminess, sweetness and amount of breast milk in new mothers.
What are the benefits of each ingredients of Fig Banana Smoothie?
Banana-Rich in iron, calcium, potassium, vitamin c. It has some extra calories which will help in boosting your energy which is much required after delivery of the baby. But this will not add in weight gain anyways.
Almond/ Almond Milk –Best food for a nursing mother as its storehouse of essential nutrients like Vitamin E, Vit B1, B2, B3 and minerals like calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc. This helps in building the immunity of the baby. It also helps in our speedy recovery after delivery. This helps in increasing the secretion of breast milk in new moms. It improves the quality and quantity of breast milk.
It’s rich in protein and fibers and hence helps in effective weight-loss without losing mineral and nutrition.
Caution: Remember to consume this in moderation. Restrict the amount to 4 per day. If newborn is allergic to nuts then you might see a few skin rashes, diarrhea, nausea, wheezing etc. In case you notice any allergy in the baby because of almonds seek doctor’s advice immediately.
Honey:This is a natural sweetener and helps in weight loss. This is safe and healthy to be consumed while breastfeeding. When combined with milk it helps in better sleep. A high level of fructose and glucose helps in boosts stamina and energy. But opt for pasteurized honey over raw honey. And take in moderation.

Walnut:Helps in increasing breast milk and helps in the development of the brain in the baby. Rich in fibers boosts metabolism and helps in losing weight.

If you can get access to fresh figs they work really well in a smoothie. If you don’t like your smoothies too sweet this is a great smoothie for you. The figs paired with the ginger make a great combination.

Our figs here can be very hit and miss. Occassionally I’ll get a gorgeous fig that tastes amazing and I think ‘This is what figs are supposed to taste like’ but most of the time they are tasteless and have been picked unripe. Even though the box says ‘ripe and ready’ on it, it very rarely is the case.
The problem with figs is that they don’t ripen once they’ve been picked, so if someone has decided the fig is ready to be picked and it’s not really ripe, you’ve got yourself an unripe tasteless fig!
So the taste of this smoothie will depend on your access to tasty ripe sweet figs. The sweeter the figs, the better the taste of the smoothie.
The figs I used to create this smoothie weren’t actually the best so I added in some sweetener in the form of dates, and despite this the smoothie is still not overly sweet, but it made a change from the very sweet smoothies I usually makes.
If you need to sweeten your smoothie up further if you’ve used unripe figs you can add more dried fruit or banana. If you want it extra creamy you can include milk rather than water, but figs make a smoothie extremely thick so you’ll probably need to include more milk than you would do water.
The original smoothie was created by the Purely Twins. They used frozen figs which would make this smoothie beautiful and refreshing. If you don’t use any frozen ingredients you can leave this to cool down in the fridge but bear in mind, the longer this smoothie is left the thicker it will get. So you might end up with a pudding rather than a smoothie which wouldn’t be a bad thing. You just need to eat it with a bowl and spoon.
Feel free to water it down if it’s too thick for you.
The purely twins also added basil to their smoothie but I chose to leave that out. However if you’re a big fan of basil, feel free to give it an aromatic twist with some basil.
Benefits of figs
Figs are full of fibre so they are a good way to lose weight as they will keep you fuller for longer and they are great for your digestion and keeping you regular.
